Houten, 4 March 2025 - Encouraging more sustainable travel is possible! This is proven by the BEAT the Traffic campaign, which has been successfully completed. Arval BNP Paribas Netherlands (Arval), a leader in mobility solutions, and BEAT Cycling Club, a professional Dutch cycling club, have jointly achieved the ambitious milestone of achieving cycling kilometres instead of car kilometres: 384,400 kilometres, the distance from the Earth to the Moon, cycled by almost 1,400 Dutch people. Over the past six months, the BEAT the Traffic challenge has inspired companies, employees and consumers to take the bike instead of the car.
Looking to the future
The Netherlands has been struggling with increasing traffic jams for some time and the environment is under pressure due to CO2 emissions. The BEAT the traffic challenge had a clear goal to increase the awareness of the Dutch people and to encourage them to take the bike more often. Everyone who participated in the challenge registered his or her bike rides via the app 'Toertje', with which the personal contribution was measured and shared. A total of 46,172 kg of CO2 emissions were saved during the challenge. That is equivalent to driving 384,800 kilometers with an average petrol car. (The CO2 emissions of an average petrol car are about 120 grams per kilometre.)
Bartek Kwapisz, Marketing and Sustainability Director at Arval Netherlands: "With the BEAT the Traffic campaign, we not only wanted to reach the business community, but also inspire our society. The success of the challenge shows how powerful it is to have a shared vision on sustainable mobility. We are extremely proud to have reached this milestone. With the completion of the BEAT the Traffic campaign, Arval Netherlands is looking ahead to new initiatives that continue to promote sustainable mobility. We want to continue to motivate people to embrace the bicycle as an alternative to the car."
Thijs Zonneveld, rider of BEAT Cycling Club and one of the drivers of the initiative: "Together we have really created something special by inspiring so many people to take the bike more often in order to make their mobility more sustainable and improve their health. It is fantastic to see that more than a thousand Dutch people have participated and cycled so many kilometers to reach the moon."
Sander Frans, co-founder of the Toertje app: "'Beat the Traffic was the very first challenge in our new launched Toertje app. We did not only keep track of the progress of the campaign, but we also got people on their bikes and made them travel more sustainable. We are grateful for the trust and pride that we have achieved this success together."
Arval Netherlands is committed to make mobility more sustainable and continues to look for innovative solutions to encourage people to travel more consciously. Fewer emissions, fewer traffic jams and more exercise must become the norm. With Arval Bike Lease, employers can easily let their employees lease a bicycle, making cycling not just a challenge, but a permanent, attractive and more sustainable alternative to the car.
